To this list, Agasthya is also sometimes added. They are Gautama, Bharadwaja, Vishvamitra, Jamadagni, Vashista, Kashyapa and Atri. According to the Brahminical theory, the Brahmins are the direct descendants of seven or eight sages who are believed to be the mind-born (like virgin born) sons of Brahma. ![]() Many theories have been propounded to explain this system. All members of a particular gotra are believed to possess certain common characteristics by way of nature or profession. When a person refers to his gotra, he means that he traces his descent from an ancient sage by unbroken male descent. The word gotra denotes the progeny (of a sage) beginning with the son’s son”. It broadly refers to people who are descendants in unbroken male line from a common male ancestor. In Hindu society the term Gotra means clan. The belief that people born into the Brahmin caste, automatically become Brahmins, is a concept that emerged later in ancient India. An example of this definition of Brahmin, that a person becomes a Brahmin, rather than being born as one, is the story of the sage Vishwamitra who was a warrior, who became a Brahmin after attaining spiritual knowledge. Irrespective of their birth or class, people who were dedicated to an austere life were recognized as Brahmins. ![]() This was described to be a difficult path of discipline of body, mind, and intellect. Traditionally the name Brahmin is given to persons who had attained the highest spiritual knowledge and who adhered to different branches of Vedas (Hindu scriptures). ![]()
